About
The National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai is the Ministry of Culture’s modern-art museum inside the restored Sir Cowasji Jehangir Public Hall in Fort. The Mumbai branch opened to the public on 23 December 1996 and presents modern and contemporary Indian art within a landmark building originally designed by George Wittet in 1911.
Architect Romi Khosla’s redesign retained the historic façade while transforming the former auditorium into a central stairway and semicircular galleries across multiple levels. Alongside exhibitions, the institution hosts discussions, book launches, dance presentations, workshops, educational programmes and auditorium events, continuing the building’s long cultural and civic history.
